From March through November, The Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania offers thrilling live harness racing in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
TRACK HISTORY
The Pocono Downs opened its doors in July 1965. In 2005, it was acquired by Mohegan and became Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Today, it is known as The Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania.
RACE HISTORY
Since 2012, Pocono Downs has held its Sun Stakes Saturday racing event every summer. The day’s racing card consists of four top races: the Earl Beal Jr. Memorial, the Max C. Hempt Memorial, the James M. Lynch Memorial, and the Delmonica Hanover.
TRACK FACTS
- Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs was Pennsylvania’s first slot-machine casino.
- The racetrack is ⅝ of a mile and has a crushed red rock surface.
- On its original opening night on July 15, 1965, the track drew a crowd of over 11,000 spectators to watch the inaugural races.
- Pocono Downs is widely considered one of the fastest harness racing tracks in North America.
- On Sun Stakes Saturday (June 28, 2014), Sebastian K set the all-time world record for the fastest trotting mile on any size track in harness racing history with a time of 1:49.0.
