GRANTVILLE, Pa. —
Horse racing is traditionally a man’s sport. But more women are getting involved in the industry, including Martina Rojas.
The 19-year-old from Grantville, Pennsylvania, got her jockey’s license in March of 2023. As of March 7, 2024, she had more than 100 first-place victories in 747 starts.
She said they like to say it’s a male business, “but if you are a strong woman and you have the heart and passion to keep going in it it’s truly an amazing career.”
Rojas grew up around horse racing and has been riding most of her life. Her father, Eduardo Rojas, was a rider and a trainer.
“The horses are like my home. When I’m on a horse, it’s the most beautiful thing. I just feel at ease. I’m very relaxed. I’m at my happy place, basically,” she said.
Rojas races mostly at Penn National Race Course in Grantville but has also competed at eight other tracks.
The Director of Racing Operations at Penn National said she has talent and passion and is naturally lightweight. Rojas is 5 foot, 2 inches and weighs 106 pounds.
Her father said he gets nervous when he sees her ride but is very proud.
Martina Rojas said it’s a lot of fun when you are going fast.
“When I come out of the gate in a race it’s a totally different feeling something you never felt before, truly,” she said
