Caravel, who is aiming for a defense of her victory in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, will go through the sale ring a few days after that race, as she has been cataloged to the Keeneland November breeding stock sale.
Both Caravel, by Mizzen Mast, and her dam, the winning Congrats mare Zeezee Zoomzoom, will be consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, as agent. Zeezee Zoomzoom, who is the dam of four winners from as many starters, also including stakes winner Witty, is in foal to Triple Crown winner Justify.
“Both [fellow managing partner Adrian Regan] and I are delighted to be selling such a unique package on the same day,” Hunter Valley managing partner Fergus Galvin said in a release. “We feel both will complement each other well. Obviously Caravel is a world-class turf sprinter, and her dam, Zeezee Zoomzoom, is in foal to Justify, who is having a phenomenal year. We’re delighted to be selling this pair.”
Caravel began her career racing for her breeder, Elizabeth Merryman, with Bobby Flay later buying a share in her. After winning five stakes over the first two seasons of her career, she was purchased for $500,000 by Galvin, acting as agent. Caravel, racing for Qatar Racing, Marc Detampel, and Madaket Stables, and trainer Brad Cox, won four stakes in 2022, highlighted by the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland.
Caravel had been cataloged to the Keeneland November sale, and in fact showed at Hunter Valley’s sales consignment following her Breeders’ Cup win, but ultimately, the partners decided to race her for one more season, with a repeat at the Breeders’ Cup the goal. The mare won her first three starts this year, including another Grade 1 score against males in the Jaipur at Belmont, before finishing fourth on soft turf in the Grade 3 Troy Stakes at Saratoga.
This year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint is on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita.
