The 2020 auction of the Standardbred Horse Sales Company wrapped up on Saturday (Nov. 7). For the first time in the history of the sale, it was held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland.
With the days adjusted to Tuesday-Saturday due to the Breeders Crown being at Hoosier the week prior, the sale got underway with it’s first session on November 3.
Muscle Hill fillies dominated the first session, with three selling for $400,000 or more. The highest was Hip 86, Delilah Hanover, who was sold to Dave McDuffee for $440,000. Delilah Hanover is out of a half sister to Donato Hanover and a half sister to Darlene Hanover, who won the Jim Doherty Memorial this past summer.
The other two yearlings to hit the $400,000 mark on Tuesday were hip 9, Peyton Hanover, and hip 124, Tippet.
The first session ended with 154 horses sold for a gross of $12,813,000 and an average of $83,201. Pacers averaged $85,911 compared to the trotters who averaged $80,347. Trotting fillies averaged the highest, ending the day with an average of $99,553.
Wednesday’s session kicked off with Hip 160, Nautical Hanover, selling for $180,000. Nautical Hanover’s price would stand as the high for the day, as fourteen others would sell for six figures, but would not hit $180,000.
Nautical Hanover was sold to Tony Alagna and is a son of Captaintreacherous out of the Bettor’s Delight mare Naughy Marietta. He is a half brother to Full Send, who was a multiple 2:00 performer on the PA fairs this past summer and second in a PA Stallion Series leg.
Wednesday’s session ended with 291 horses sold for a gross of $10,386,000 and an average of $35,691. The roles reversed on day two, as trotters averaged $37,455 over the pacers who averaged $34,435. Trotting fillies again topped the session, with 59 of them averaging $39,661.
The yearling portion of the sale wrapped up on Thursday. The session was topped by the Shadow Play colt Shadowmoon Rising, who was sold to Dr Ian Moore for $115,000 as hip 591.
Shadowmoon Rising is out of the Western Hanover mare Lofty Yankee and is a full brother to Shadow Moon, who took a 1:51:4 mark as a two year old and was a multiple time winner in the Ontario Sires Stakes.
Others to break into the six figure category on Thursday were Hip 624, Alehouse Hanover and Hip 700 Thx Again Bluechip.
328 horses went through the ring on Thursday and were sold for a total of $6,341,000 and an average of $19,332. Trotters again averaged slightly above pacers at $19,612 to the pacers $19,032. Pacing colts topped the session with an average of $21,688.
The yearling sale wrapped up with declines in both gross and averages when compared to the last two years, likely due to the Coronavirus.
The mixed sale began on Friday with yearlings, weanlings, stallion shares, and broodmares. It was Hip number 1140, Somwherovrarainbow, who topped the day. Consigned by Diamond Creek Farm, she was sold to Crawford Farms for $240,000. Somwherovrarainbow was the 2012 Breeders Crown 2-Year-Old Filly Pace.
In the Stallion Share department, it was Muscle Hill who topped that session. Four shares of Muscle Hill were sold for between $110,000 and $117,000.
On the pacing side, Captaintreacherous topped the session with Crawford Farms purchasing a share for $115,000.
The first day of the mixed sale wrapped up with a gross of $6,567,000 and an average of $23,880.
The sale came to a close on Saturday with Sister Sledge topping the day. The Hambletonian starter was sold to Robert Lindstrom for $265,000.
Two other mares also broke the $200,000 barrier on Saturday. Joe Parisi was the successful bidder on Hip 1400, Philly Hanover. The Captaintreacherous mare came into the sale after racing in the Breeders Crown Open Mare pace just six days ago at Hoosier Park.
The other mare to break $200,000 was Love Muffin. The Andover Hall two year old was the 2020 PA Stallion Series 2-Year-Old Filly Trot champion. She was purchased by Steve Stewart.
446 offerings in book two grossed $12,844,000 and averaged $28,798. Trotting fillies again led the racehorses, as 45 of those averaged $52,222.The week in Timonium wrapped up with an overall gross of $42,384,000.
