A good Pennsylvania-bred can make a lot of money for their connections in a short amount of time, and Aoife’s Magic embodied that notion in 2023, leading all horses by Pennsylvania incentive earnings with just four starts.

The daughter of Smarty Jones went a perfect four-for-four during her juvenile campaign in 2023, earning $340,800 in total incentives, combining breeder’s awards, stallion awards, owner bonuses, and state-bred stakes purses.

Horses bred and sired in the Keystone State are eligible for a 40 percent purse bonus on earnings, and Aoife’s Magic was the leading earner of breeder’s awards last year, bringing in $107,040 for breeder Mohns Hill Farm.

The filly was also the leading generator of stallion owner’s awards last year, earning $26,160 for Patricia Chapman, owner of sire Smarty Jones. Registered Pennsylvania-breds by a state-resident sire earn a 10 percent bonus on purse for first-through-third efforts at tracks within the state.

Aoife’s Magic also earned an additional $12,000 for owner A and J Racing Stable for her Pennsylvania-bred status. Because the filly was both bred and sired in Pennsylvania, she was eligible for a 40 percent owner bonus on her purse earnings for races at Parx Racing.

The season started for Aoife’s Magic on Sept. 11, where she debuted in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Parx, and demolished the field by 10 3/4 lengths.

Trainer David Dotolo then took the filly to stakes competition for the first time in the 6 1/2-furlong Imply Stakes at Parx on Sept. 23, and she didn’t miss a beat. After finding her spot on the rail, Aoife’s Magic drew off to win by 4 1/4 lengths.
