Tyson, a beautifully bred, graded stakes winner, arrived in Pennsylvania several weeks ago to start his new career at stud duty. By one of the country’s leading and influential sires, Tapit, Tyson is out of a female dynasty that includes third dam, Better Than Honour. Kentucky Broodmare of the Year in 2007, Better Than Honour sold for a world record price of $14 million as a broodmare or broodmare prospect at the 2008 November Fasig-Tipton Sale in Kentucky. She is the dam of two Grade 1 Belmont Stakes winners, Jazil and Rags to Riches. Tyson’s second dam, Teeming is the dam of Modeling, dam of Arcangelo, 2023 Grade 1Belmont Stakes winner and Eclipse Champion Three Year Old. Arcangelo stands at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky for a stud fee of $35,000. Tyson’s dam, Honouring is a winning full sister to Streaming, Grade 1 winner of the Hollywood Starlet Stakes, and stakes winner Treasuring, both have produced stakes winners. Tyson hails from one of the best and strongest female families in the country.

“He’s the whole package,” said Ed Price, bloodstock agent and advisor to Darryl Myers, who purchased Tyson to stand at his new farm, Stone Jug Ranch, near Dillsburg, PA. “When he came up for sale, I thought he would be a great stallion for Pennsylvania. He has a great pedigree, he’s a stakes winner, and he’s athletic and smart,” Price said. The six year old Tyson retired after ten starts with four wins, one second, and two thirds, and earnings of $378,548. Winning his debut at Gulfstream Park going one mile and one sixteenth on the all weather track, Tyson made it two in a row when he won his second start at Woodbine Trained by Josie Carroll and bred and owned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings and Stretch Run Ventures, LLC, Tyson won the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes and the Grade 2 Seagram Cup Stakes, both at Woodbine. His next start was at Saratoga in the Grade1 Jockey Club Gold Cup on the dirt where he was third facing tough rivals in the million dollar race. He won the Canadian Sovereign Award for Champion Older Horse in 2023, and he returned to the races in 2024 and was second in the Grade 2 bet365 Eclipse Stakes at Woodbine. Retired from racing in 2024, Tyson was sold to Price as a stallion prospect at the 2024 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. “We had been thinking about standing a stallion at our Stone Jug Ranch, and when Tyson became available, we thought he was the right horse for us in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania has a great breeders program with great incentives for breeding and racing in the state,” said Darryl Myers.

Stone Jug Ranch consists of two farms several miles apart, one for mares and the other for stallions and the breeding operation. According to Morgan Shenk, farm manager, “everything is new here. Darryl put in all new fencing with rounded corners in the fields and paddocks for safety. There are new sheds in the fields and paddocks, and they are equipped with big bale feeders. The flooring in the barns is rubber paving, and the ventilation is great in the barns.” At the stallion farm, the old dairy barn was totally renovated and fitted with steel reinforcement. Large, airy new stalls were built with a center aisle of interlocking rubber pavers to ensure a horse’s safety. A brand new round pen with rubber mulching is conveniently located outside the breeding shed. A showplace and a first-class facility designed with safety and efficiency a priority. Stone Jug Ranch is a great addition to Pennsylvania’s breeding program.

“Tyson is settling into his new surroundings and adjusting to his new routine,” said Morgan. “He’s a smart horse and a little tricky.” Tyson’s stud fee for 2025 is $3,500 and $2,500 for multiple bookings. Their web site is stonejugranch.com. “We’ll give special consideration to PA foaling mares and stakes producing mares. We already have inquiries about him and mares booked,” said Price. “We believe he’s a good value considering his breeding and race record, and we’re looking forward to a good start to Tyson’s new career.”
